Virginia is a state in the southern United States with a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The state is named after Queen Elizabeth I of England who was known as known as the "Virgin Queen" because he never had a husband.
Virginia's coast has been explored by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1584 and Virginia became the site established the first permanent English colony in the New World. At one time, the colony, even including Bermuda (formerly known as "Virgineola).
Virginia was one of the thirteen original colonies that rebelled against England during the American Revolution (1775-1783), and played an important role in the history of the States USA. State is sometimes known as the "Mother of Presidents", having produced more presidents than any other state: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson.
The Virginia capital of Richmond (who was also the capital of the Confederate States American Civil War of 1861-1865), and the state's largest city is Virginia Beach. Other major cities in Virginia: Alexandria, Bedford, Bristol, Buena Vista, Charlottesville, Chesapeake, Colonial Heights, Covington, Danville, Emporia, Fairfax, Falls Church, Franklin, Fredericksburg, Galax, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Hopewell, Lexington, Lynchburg, Manassas, Manassas Park, Martinsville, Newport News, Norfolk, Norton, Petersburg, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Radford, Roanoke, Salem, Staunton, Suffolk, Waynesboro, Williamsburg and Winchester. Moreover, being so close to Washington DC, Virginia, home of much of the spill "on the National Capital: More than a dozen public bodies (including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Ministry of Defence, Immigration and Naturalization Service, the National Science Foundation, U.S. U.S. DEA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency), are headquartered in the state – many of them are located in Arlington or Rosslyn.
There are many attractions in Virginia, including many sites and ancient monuments, including Arlington House, (in Arlington), the Marine Corps War Memorial in Rosslyn, the birthplace of George Washington National Monument, near Colonial Beach, the Museum of the Confederacy (including the House White Confederation) in Richmond, and the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford,
– Some large companies are based in Virginia, AOL (Dulles), Dominion Resources (Richmond), Freddie Mac (McLean), General Dynamics (Falls Church) and Sprint Nextel (Reston).
– Major airports serving the airport include Virginia Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport in Arlington and Washington Dulles International Chantilly.
– Probably the most famous educational institution Virginia is the University of Virginia in Charlottesville is.
– Sports teams in Virginia include Hillcats Lynchburg (Carolina baseball) in Lynchburg, Norfolk Tides (International League baseball) in Norfolk, Potomac Nationals (Carolina baseball) in Woodbridge, Richmond Braves (International League Baseball) in Richmond, and Salem Avalanche (Carolina League baseball) in Salem.
