For a man of 17 to ride. only concerned about the theft.
I ride from time to time since was 17 years and have never been stolen. I shouted into the crazy / drunk accosted by Jehovah's Witnesses, and sneezing, but no one has tried to steal. Some roads are more hood than others, but never caused any problem for me. Wearing a helmet, sunglasses and what looks like a DS or a magazine or book to avoid not attract the attention of bored people, strange taking the bus to pass the time. Do not look, you have your ticket ready, know where to go (I is not asking more than 30 seconds when the driver, who have schedules and many other customers to serve), and you'll be fine.
