I had a weird experience last night – total trac.
When I say "rare", I mean I've been a ham aside, as long as I can remember. While the deer "in the headlights" look, the action of gasping fish's mouth, and the feeling of panic Total is unusual for me. And when I say " total stage fright, "I mean that my vocal cords were so closely confined that my voice was closer Popeye Olivia speaking.
The occasion was a house in the old town (Gainesville, Texas), former home church (1st Baptist) appearance in front of 200 mothers and daughters, most of them knew – and who know me – All my life. I froze for the simple reason that I really leaning on this crowd. I was in Youth Choir of some 40 years ago. Mother secondary school has been the best friend of the foreground. Heck, I married again to one's sister! In other words, they and I share a common history. I do not want to let them down, but – as my time to know approached – could hardly breathe!
If this has never happened to you, I think – no. Stage Fright (technically known as performance anxiety) affect the Olympic athletes, one of the students facing exams and even swaggering veteran like me. Actually did not need to involve a step in the literal sense at all, even though – for most people – a moment on the podium or on stage seems like an eternity. All necessary for performance anxiety to kick in an overwhelming desire not to come to you (often accompanied by an equally overwhelming desire to vomit.)
breaths deep and imagining your audience naked except for black socks, two are the most commonly recommended measures-cons. Vice President Andrew Johnson, before 1865 opening speech, attempted to alcohol to calm their nerves. It did not work (it never does.) Alcohol makes you a drunk not nervous. 1920 Al Jolson stars softened phase his opening night nerves by the belief that each person in the audience was an old and dear friend. (Of course, not work for me – old friends in the audience were the cause of my nerves!)
Ultimately, what worked for me was focusing on a single smiling face. In my case, that face belonged to Jayne Austin (My former choir director, and the widow of my father has long been the closest associate of the music.) I've known all my life. Always has been incredibly kind to my efforts at the scene. His smile was so serene, his trust in me so complete that marked his time for sure I could not break the deadlock and forth. Later I selected other smiling faces. And soon, my nerves – almost – gone.
Obi Wan Kenobi believed in the power of the Force. It must have been an artist. He smiles and nods reassuringly (saying "You can do it!) Actually have a force Cumulative each artist was at one time or another. When it is pointed directly at us, give us peace, the will and power as nothing of this land.
So – in his next hits the scare – May the Force be with you!
